The Danish Data Science Academy (DDSA) is a national network with the mission to support and promote excellence in data science by supporting research, teaching, training, networking, and knowledge-sharing. While DDSA is a young organisation in both spirit and age, their team includes seasoned experts from the field. Their new visual identity needed the ability to speak to student talent as well as stakeholders from the academic, public and private sector.

As DDSA was a recently-founded organisation with a brand new team we decided to engage them in a Clarity Workshop in order to collaboratively discover and articulate the goals for the project. The result was an aligned and highly motivated team, and clear objects for us to follow during the design process.

The DDSA’s visual identity needed to convey their focus on excellence, but also required an inspiring and innovative feel to attract the curious minds of top talent. The abstract character of data science offered a great opportunity to create something impactful and versatile. A set of abstract patterns which speak of flow and transformation visualise this notion. The patterns can be applied in a large variety of ways.

Combined with a simple but bold colour palette the visual language allows DDSA to speak in a wide range of different voices – from serious and calm, to energetic and curious.

DDSA’s identity gets its best opportunities to make an impact during their networking events and presentations. The brand guidelines outline a clear system that makes the identity not only straight forward to work with, but also makes it flexible in its expression.
